Why Choose Montmorillonite?
🌿
Natural & Safe
Natural mineral raw materials — safe, non-toxic, physically inert, non-irritating, and not absorbed by the body. Suitable for use by pets, infants, and young children.
šŸ’Ø
Super Strong Adsorption
First-class odor absorption layer structure with a super large specific surface area — absorbs odor, moisture, bacteria, and drug substances, locking odor on contact.
šŸ’§
Rapid Clumping
Quickly agglomerates on contact with water, expands and solidifies fast. Compact clumps that don't stick to the bottom — easy to clean with low usage overall.
šŸƒ
Low Dust Formula
Non-irritating to the nose and respiratory tract. Fine texture, high compaction, almost no dust — more friendly to sensitive individuals and pets.
šŸ›”ļø
Strong Long-Term Stability
Not easily deteriorated — moisture resistant, high-temperature resistant, and not easily moldy. Stores for a long time with consistently stable performance.
Core Functions of the Product
1 Cation Exchange Property
Cation exchange is one of the most important properties of montmorillonite. The cations adsorbed between montmorillonite layers have exchangeability, and the total amount of these cations is called cation exchange capacity (CEC). In aqueous media, other exchangeable cations and water molecules can enter the interlayer, and this process is reversible. By utilizing the cation exchange properties of montmorillonite, various products such as sodium based bentonite, lithium based montmorillonite, activated clay, pillared montmorillonite, and organic montmorillonite can be prepared.
2 Water Absorption and Swelling Properties
Montmorillonite contains a large number of hydroxyl groups in its structure, with strong hydrophilicity and significant water absorption and swelling characteristics. Expansion is mainly based on the hydration of interlayer cations, which adsorb water molecules to form a hydration film, increasing the interlayer spacing. After absorbing water, the volume can expand several times to dozens of times to form gel-like substances. The hydration expansion includes three stages:
  • ā‘  Surface hydration
  • ā‘” Ionic hydration
  • ā‘¢ Permeation hydration
3 Dispersed Suspension
In aqueous media, due to the negative charge of montmorillonite particles, they repel each other and are difficult to form large particle aggregates at low concentrations. Therefore, they have good suspension properties and can be used as suspension agents. Suspension properties increase with pH value, and are better under alkaline conditions than under neutral and acidic conditions.
4 Thickening Property
When mixed with water, montmorillonite hydrates and expands, forming a massive three-dimensional network structure. The water molecules and lotion particles are wrapped and isolated to increase their motion resistance, achieving a thickening effect. As time goes on, this colloidal structure tends to stabilize.
5 Thixotropy
During stirring, the colloidal structure is disrupted, the viscosity of the system decreases, and it becomes a sol. When standing still, the colloidal structure recovers and the viscosity increases in the form of gel. The process of restoring the colloidal structure is reversible and is known as the thixotropy of montmorillonite.
6 Stability
Montmorillonite is a natural inorganic mineral material with good stability and weather resistance.
ā‘  Good Chemical Stability Montmorillonite is insoluble in water and various solvents, and is not reduced or oxidized at room temperature. It has a wide range of pH resistance and its structure is not easily affected by acids, bases, or salts. It has good compatibility with organic anions and alcohol solvents.
ā‘” Good Thermal Stability The dehydroxylation temperature of montmorillonite is generally 550°C–750°C, at which the structural hydroxyl groups are removed but the layer structure is not destroyed, exhibiting excellent thermal stability.
ā‘¢ Good Biological Stability Montmorillonite is not affected by bacteria or microorganisms. Its suspension is not easily moldy or spoiled under humid and hot conditions, even at summer temperatures of 30–40°C. It does not undergo enzymatic hydrolysis, develop odors, or suffer viscosity reduction like organic thickeners such as cellulose and xanthan gum.
Other Purposes

Field

Use

Medicine &
Personal Care

Antidiarrheal medicine: The most well-known application of montmorillonite (e.g. "montmorillonite powder") — adsorbs bacteria, toxins, and excess water in the intestine, and repairs the mucosal barrier.
Dermatological medication: Used for diaper rash, acne, eczema, etc. — provides adsorption, drying, and protective effects.
Cosmetics: Used as adsorbent, thickener, and suspension stabilizer in cream and facial mask formulations.

Industrial Sector

Drilling mud: A key material for petroleum and geological drilling mud — cools drill bits, carries rock debris, and maintains wellbore stability.
Casting: Used as a binder for molding sand in metal casting.
Metallurgy: Used as a binder for iron ore pellets.
Environment protection — a. Adsorbents: Treats heavy metals, organic compounds, and dyes in wastewater.
b. Anti-leakage material: Mixed with soil to form anti-seepage layers for landfills and reservoirs (e.g. sodium based bentonite waterproof blanket).
Catalysts and carriers: Can be used as chemical catalysts or carriers due to special surface properties and ion exchange ability.
Papermaking and Coatings: Used as fillers and thickeners to improve paper whiteness and coating performance.

Agriculture &
Animal Husbandry

Feed additive: Acts as an antifungal agent, adsorbs mycotoxins in feed, improves animal intestinal health, and stops diarrhea.
Soil amendment: Improves soil water and fertilizer retention capacity, adjusts pH value, and enables slow-release fertilizers.
Pesticide carrier: Makes pesticides easier to adhere to plant surfaces and release slowly.

Daily Life

Pet supplies: As the main component of cat litter — strong water absorption, clumping, and deodorizing abilities.
Desiccant: Used for packaging food and electronic products.
Detergent: Used as a fabric softener and anti-redeposition agent.

Precautions
āš ļø Medicinal Safety
As an over-the-counter antidiarrheal, it is generally not absorbed by the human body and is relatively safe. However, please note:
  • ā‘  It should be taken 1–2 hours apart from other medications to avoid affecting their absorption.
  • ā‘” Overdosing may lead to constipation.
  • ā‘¢ When treating acute diarrhea, pay attention to fluid replacement to prevent dehydration.
🚫 Industrial Grade vs. Pharmaceutical Grade
Montmorillonite with different uses has different purity and impurity control standards, and cannot be mixed. Industrial bentonite should never be consumed internally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1What is montmorillonite and what is it made of?
Montmorillonite is a natural non-metallic mineral, chemically known as water aluminum silicate. It is a type of smectite clay mineral formed through the natural weathering of volcanic ash. Its unique layered structure gives it exceptional adsorption, swelling, and cation-exchange properties, making it widely used across pharmaceutical, industrial, agricultural, and everyday applications.
Q2Is montmorillonite safe for use around pets, infants, and young children?
Yes. Montmorillonite is non-toxic, tasteless, and non-irritating. Because it is physically inert and not absorbed by the body, it is safe for use around pets, infants, and young children when used appropriately — for example as cat litter or pharmaceutical-grade antidiarrheal medication. Always ensure the product grade matches its intended use.
Q3What is the difference between industrial-grade and pharmaceutical-grade montmorillonite?
Industrial-grade and pharmaceutical-grade montmorillonite differ significantly in purity levels and impurity control standards. Pharmaceutical-grade montmorillonite (such as montmorillonite powder used as an antidiarrheal) must meet strict medical safety requirements. Industrial bentonite is intended only for drilling, casting, and environmental applications and must never be consumed internally.
Q4What packaging options and sizes are available?
Montmorillonite is available in multiple sizes (6L, 10L, 25L) and weights (2.5 KG, 5 KG, 10 KG, 20 KG). Packaging options include plastic bags, woven bags, ton bags, cardboard boxes, and OEM custom packaging. Shipping is available via both air and sea freight. Shipping options can be arranged based on order volume and destination.
Q5Can I request a free sample before placing a bulk order?
Yes — free samples can be provided. We encourage customers to evaluate product quality before committing to a bulk order. Samples can be arranged by submitting a request to confirm shipping details.
Q6How should montmorillonite be stored to maintain its performance?
Montmorillonite has strong inherent stability — it is moisture resistant, high-temperature resistant, and not easily moldy, which makes long-term storage straightforward. It is recommended to store it in a cool, dry place away from direct moisture exposure. Its biological stability also ensures the product does not degrade or develop odors over time, even in humid or warm environments.
